From Hendaye there are two ways of crossing the River Bidasoa and starting the St James' Way through Gipuzkoa, either crossing the Santiago Bridge towards Irún or by boat on a pleasant trip to Hondarribia.
In Hondarribia, you can admire Carlos V's city walls and fort that dominate the town. Leaving the old part of town via St Mary's Gate, we will follow the signs leading us to the Santa Engrazi hermitage, and to one side a stairway marks the start of the path to Santiago. This path then rises through a rural landscape to the 16th century Guadalupe Sanctuary, close to the fort bearing the same name, and a crossroads where we have two options: up along the Jaizkibel ridge that goes up to 543 metres along a path divided up by several towers or continuing mid-slope along the south face of the mountain along a gently-sloped easy route.

Close to the end of the crest, the main route drops down to Lezo, a landmark along the coastal branch of the St James' Way. The town is located next to the mouth of the River Oiartzun and at the foot of Pasaia bay. It is worth visiting St John the Baptist's parish church and Christ's Basilica (17th century), a place of great devotion where they worship the image of a beardless Christ in Gothic style.
From Lezo, the route soon leads us to Pasai Donibane, one of the most authentic and best preserved seafaring towns in Gipuzkoa.
